There’s been a lot of buzz about bringing your “whole self” or “authentic self” to work. But let’s be honest — just because people are talking about it doesn’t make it a good idea.

No one really wants your entire self at work. We all have strengths and quirks and not everything should be brought to work. For example, I’m a naturally messy person. A cluttered desk actually helps me focus. But in many workplaces with “clean desk” policies, my authentic (messy) self doesn’t go over well.

The truth? It’s okay to wear a bit of a costume — to show up as your best, most professional self. Dressing the part or putting on your work mode is not inauthentic; it’s being wise.

Next time you’re thinking about bringing your “authentic” self to work, leave the messy desk at home.

What’s one part of your ‘authentic self’ that doesn’t belong at work?
